About

I’ve spent my career tracing how decisions become systems, and how those systems shape the people working within them.

Portrait of Garrett Polifka

A career spent connecting the layers.

My perspective widened with each role: first the interface, then the platform behind it, and finally the operating model that helps people put it to work.

  1. Implementation

I began close to the implementation layer, designing and building front-end experiences. That work showed me how quickly good intent can get lost between a design file and production. It also exposed the cost of having every team solve the same problem differently.

  2. Leadership

As I moved through product design, Scrum facilitation, design leadership, product ownership, and design-system management, my focus widened. The interface still mattered, but so did the roadmap, contribution model, architecture, documentation, governance, release process, support system, and organizational trust around it.

  3. Pattern architecture

That is the work I now describe as pattern architecture: seeing recurring conditions across product, design, engineering, operations, and organizations; translating them into understandable structures; and creating practical blueprints people can use.

  4. Platform stewardship

My deepest professional body of work is the long-term stewardship and modernization of Paylocity’s Citrus Design System. I helped guide it through multiple generations—from a small shared effort into a more mature platform, and later through a generational change in architecture, foundations, and rollout.

  5. Current practice

I’m now applying those lessons to AI-enabled workflows and organizational operating systems. My focus is the layer between model capability and human work: the knowledge, guardrails, feedback, and decision rights that make a new capability useful and durable.

How I lead

Calm enough to hear the real problem. Structured enough to make it visible.

I use structure to help people make better decisions, not to control the work. I listen across disciplines, make tradeoffs explicit, and create artifacts teams can use as shared references.

I am comfortable moving between executive intent and implementation detail, while staying honest about where specialist ownership belongs. I care about accessibility, fairness, transparency, and the long-term health of both the platform and the team.

Where I add value

Shared infrastructure needs product thinking, operating discipline, and trust.

I do my best work where a shared platform or program matters to many teams and needs clearer ownership, operating discipline, adoption, and trust.

That can mean senior leadership or senior individual-contributor work across enterprise design systems, DesignOps, UX and experience platforms, product or platform operations, and cross-functional technical programs.

For focused consulting engagements, I begin with a diagnostic and turn the findings into a practical system blueprint.
